POPSHOP WEST 009: BAD THINGS

Our next Popshop West is a blessed-coast blast of California sun. Getting things started we have sprightly LA songstress Cillie Barnes and local dream-surf favorites Cayucas, with Captain Cuts keeping things moving on the decks all night long, as per usual. Then in the main headline slot, we've got new kids on the block, Bad Things, stepping out from behind the veil in their worldwide live debut. And best of all, it's the one year anniversary of our Popshop West launch last spring and the perfect appetizer for a three-course weekend of Coachella bliss later that week. It's all going down Tuesday April 9th at our favorite home away from home, The Echo. $8 advance tickets are now available HERE, and we can't shake the feeling Bad Things might have a few surprises up their sleeve to make this a night to remember. So trust us when we tell you not to sleep on this one.

INTRODUCING: POPSHOP WEST.

Westward expansion was only a matter of time, and now the Neon Gold manifest destiny has been fully realized as Popshop West is born. Back for the very first time, we're teaming up with Hit City USA to bring our monthly NYC mainstay to the fairer coast, kicking off Monday April 9th with a very special, very FREE launch party at The Echoplex. Headlining are none other than everyone's favorite new band HAIM, with support from white hot LA heatseekers Wildcat! Wildcat! and Ko Ko. Then on the decks we've got our resident DJ's Captain Cuts, keeping things moving all night long alongside westside partystarters Guns In The Sun. It all kicks off April 9th from 8pm to late for the low, low price of FREE AS SHIT, so come out and get involved LA, it's gonna be a good ass night. RSVP: RSVP@neongoldrecords.com.

GROUPLOVE. OFFICIAL ALBUM RELEASE PARTY.

Our love for Grouplove truly knows no bounds, and we've had their debut full length Never Trust A Happy Song (released TODAY) stuck on repeat on the office stereo since they sent it through earlier this summer. Now, as a proper salute to the finest group of musicians on the left coast, we're throwing their official album release party Wednesday night after the band headline their biggest NYC play to date at Bowery Ballroom. Immediately after the show's conclusion, we'll be taking things back to our second home at Tammany Hall around the corner to indulge in a well-deserved celebration for the ages, complete with DJ sets from Xaphoon Jones, Captain Cuts and Grouplove themselves.

Furthermore, we'll also have the live debut of a brand new band by the name of Stay Gold, an oven fresh project from Kris Menace and Max Cooke, former mastermind behind the UK's late great GoodBooks and essential fixture in Ellie Goulding's touring band. Joining him on live drums will be everyone's favorite beatsmith, Xaphoon "You Crazy" Jones, before he swaps the sticks for the decks to close out the night on the ones and twos. And to top it all off, it's completely FREE. All you have to do is show up with your rageface on and a government issued ID saying you're 21+.

And in case all that wasn't exciting enough, to ring in the occasion we've got another very special exclusive from Xaphoon for you. Many of you may remember the "Colours" remix of Grouplove we premiered in June, but in an effort to come up with "something to scare people at festivals with", he went back into the lab and created a whole new beast of a bootleg edit "scrounged from the chasm-like depths of [his] hard drives". The result is the brand new MEGA EDIT of the mix that he's been tearing crowds in half with all summer long, complete with earth-shattering new bass surges in the chorus, dancehall snares and new vocal effects. Harder. Better. Monster. Stronger.

THIS COLD INSIDE ME.

In case you didn't already know, in the United States of Neon Gold Captain Cuts are pretty much a household name and house party staple. Their newest offering is a daring remix of Young The Giant's "Apartment", which serves as yet another prime example of their production brilliance. Forget what you heard, because what was once a headstrong indie rock anthem is given a space age facelift and it's a ravishing new look for the California rock outfit.

As synth ships set sail across an ocean of noise, Sameer Gadhia's impassioned vocals cut in and leave a trail of emotion in their wake as the beat gradually starts to pick up steam. The verses are relatively straightforward at first, before it all gets sucked into Captain Cuts' electronic whirlpool on the chorus and the song comes to life. But it's merely a hint at what's to drop, as the last minute of looped vocals and self-affirming chord progressions make it feel like you're truly on the ride of your life. You can cop an exclusive download of the remix below, and keep an eye out for a full remix EP from Young The Giant - featuring the likes of Two Door, Tokyo Police Club and more - dropping on their Facebook page next week.

GROUPLOVE. DC. AFTERPARTY.

Grouplove are pretty much our favorite band in the game right now so we're gonna spend the next couple days following them around throwing afterparties for them just because. First up is DC (with NYC coming next week), and as soon as we shake off our Popshop hangovers Friday morning we're hopping in the whip and cruising down to our second home to catch Grouplove demolishing The Black Cat before doing it up big with All Things Go for a FREE All Things Gold afterparty at Napoleon. We'll have Grouplove and Captain Cuts on the decks all night, as well as our dude Lightwaves, and it will rule. Trust.

POPSHOP RADIO 009

With great pop power comes great responsibility, and as your friendly neighborhood party people, we promise an amazing September night for y'all tonight. We've also got a last minute line up change for you, as Tiger Love have unfortunately had to cancel their performance at this month's show due to eleventh hour visa issues, but do trust that they will be back, bigger and better, to blow up a future Popshop this fall. Amply filling their shoes though will be our beloved Captain Cuts, who's got an arsenal of new bangers 'n mashes up his sleeve that we can't wait for y'all to salivate over. Oh and worry not, the rest of the allstar lineup remains fully intact and as glorious as ever.

Right on time, we've got another Popshop Radio mix from The Knocks to help you get your game face on before this Thursday. In addition to mainstays from Wynter Gordon, Samuel, and Goldsmith, there's also a whole slew of unreleased exclusives courtesy of The Knocks and Captain Cuts, with a special spotlight on the Captain's Foster The People and Dizzee Rascal mix which is just about the most amazing thing we've heard in ages. Also featured are some very familiar faces like the legendary Fatboy Slim and brand new Neon Gold fam ANR with "It's Around You". As rhetorical as it sounds, this is easily our best edition of the Radio yet, so get involved and reap its rewards. All advance tickets for tonight are sold out, but there will be an extremely limited amount of $15 tickets (keyword: EXTREMELY) available on the door tonight, so get down early if you want to be a part of what's shaping up to be our biggest Popshop ever.

ALL THINGS GOLD 002: THE KNOCKS + ANR

With the launch of All Things Gold a raging success last month (500+ tix sold, whoa) as Penguin Prison, RAC and Reptar tore the roof off a sold out (and then some) U Street Music Hall, we're back with yet another stacked lineup to shake DC to its very core. For starters, we've got our resident partystarters The Knocks headlining what will be their first US gig in a minute with a revamped live show and some brand new hits for your ears. Then we've got stellar support from Miami's finest (and the latest addition to the Neon Gold family) ANR and the magnificent St. Lucia making his highly anticipated live debut. And as if that wasn't enough, Lightwaves and Captain Cuts will be watching the throne in between sets, presiding over the dancefloor on the ones and twos all night long. Doors are at 9pm and Heineken drink specials will be popping off left and right, and for the low low price of $10 advance tickets (or $13 on the door), don't just make plans to make plans - make plans, make moves and make memories. Advance tickets available HERE, last time sold out in advance (and sold out hard) so don't get shut out in the sweltering DC heat two months in a row. Set times and streaming mp3s below, you know the drill.

BACK TO BUSINESS.

And so the Year of the Captain continues. What began as an official remix for Beyonce's ladies night anthem "Girls" quickly turned into a whole new beast once Captain Cuts introduced it to the Beastie Boys' classic of the same name, and my how these "Girls" play nicely together.

Leaving the traditional major label remix approach in the rearview, the Captains take a detour and go the mash up route, replaying the Beasties' parts themselves to fit Beyonce's vocal as if they were expert tailors of the dancefloor, working around the clock in the name of the beat. The end result is a work of staggering remix genius, as the Captains prove once again that they're operating on a whole different level from just about everyone else in the remix game. "Girls On Girls" - as it's called - is the first taste of many amazing things to come on Captain Cuts' debut mixtape, titled This Is Your Captain Speaking and coming at you later this month. Watch this space, you won't want to miss this.

POPSHOP RADIO 007

After emerging unscathed from an adult-sized weekend that saw us kicking off a new great American pastime with the sold out Stars + Stripe Festival, we're back in the game with a bit more color and a much deeper thirst for live music and free drinks. What better way to get back in the swing of living the NYC dream than another Popshop to shake up your daily routine? We've got a rogue's gallery of guaranteed firecrackers tonight: Spacecamp, K. Flay, and our beloved Neon Gold alumnus Penguin Prison. Furthermore, we've got Captain Cuts with all hands on decks for what's sounding like it could be one of the biggest DJ sets we've ever had, and did we mention that there's once again an OPEN BAR on Absolut from 8-9pm and a FREE KEG of Heineken from 2-3am? Anyone needing testament to the epic scale Popshop has grown to look further than the massive new Chiddy Bang video for "I Can't Stop", filmed amongst the late night crowd at Popshop 006 and edited to perfection by our friends at Jackpot In The West. We've said it once before and we'll stay it again, this is why you ALWAYS stay late night.

As is Popshop tradition, The Knocks - fresh off of signing a crispy record deal with Universal and a barnburner of a performance at Stars + Stripes - are back with another Popshop minimix, killing it yet again on this month's installment of Popshop Radio. This month's specially curated teaser features a summery mix of our special performers, spiked with some recent favorites we've been knocking about in the office soundsystem. Check the full tracklist and stream/download below, and let it serve as a reminder to cop your advance tickets HERE before they sell out. For a mere $10, there's lights, music, and some FREE surprise themed cocktails. We can't keep something this big a secret anymore, so get involved before it's too late.

1. "Toeachizown Hello" (Mr Jpatt of The Knocks Mix) - Dam Funk vs. The Beatles
2. "Alibi" - Spacecamp
3. "5am" (ft. K. Flay) - Something AlaMode
4. "Fair Warning" (Oliver Remix) - Penguin Prison
5. "I Wanna Go" (Captain Cuts Remix) - Britney Spears
6. "The Night Out" (ft. Thomas Mars) - Martin Solveig
7. "Sunshine" - The Knocks

POPSHOP007: PENGUIN PRISON + K. FLAY

NYC you're killing it this summer. Rooftops are buzzing, the streets are alive and there's beautiful people everywhere you look. And things are only gonna get better next week when we throw down Neon Gold style with an all-American Popshop for the ages July 7th at Tammany Hall. But first let's talk about last month for a minute, because it might have been the biggest Popshop yet - Body Language tore the roof off of the place with one of the best performances we've had yet, Xaphoon Jones killed it with a DJ set for the ages and Chiddy even stopped by joining Xaph for a Chiddy Bang video shoot in the club before dropping an impromptu late night performance on the mic. In other words, it was HUGE.

Onwards and upwards though, as we look ahead to the July edition with another stellar lineup and more open bar deals than ever. Joining us once again on the Popshop stage after crushing it with The Knocks at POPSHOP 002, it's our main man Penguin Prison back to run things in the headline slot with support from Brooklyn hip hop sensation K. Flay (homegirl KILLS it) and NYC indie hopefuls Spacecamp, plus another barnstorming DJ set from our dudes Captain Cuts, who have put together one of the best sets we've ever heard for Popshop this month. And then we've got Absolut back with another hour of open bar vodka from 8pm-9pm, and Heineken getting in the mix to pop open a free keg for the crowd late night. It's all going down at Tammany Hall on July 7th, which gives you just enough time to recover from your July 4th festivities and get back in tip top raging shape for Thursday night. As per usual, tickets are $10 in advance and $13 on the door, kind of an insane bargain giving just how much free alcohol we'll be plying you with all night. Tickets HERE, let's do this New York.

SO PULL THE SWITCH.

So last week our main man Xaphoon Jones promised a new beat to his fans when he hit 20,000 followers, and now that he's eclipsed that milestone he's come to us to help him deliver the goods with an exclusive premier of his remix for Grouplove's "Colours". This track's already been remixed into oblivion and beyond by the homies Captain Cuts, but here Xaph's intertwined elements of their empire-toppling mix with the stems of the original, thrown them into the Xaphoon Jones pop magic machine and come out the other side with a barnstorming floor-filler that comes off like like Grouplove wildin' out down in Jamaica with Gyptian and Nicki Minaj. And trust us, that is a GREAT thing.

Xaphoon tore the fucking roof off of Tammany Hall at Popshop last Thursday with a DJ set for the ages, and he's back for round two next Tuesday at the Beyond Gold launch party, which conveniently also features Grouplove headlining live and the NYC debut of Captain Cuts alongside Xaph on the decks in what we can only hope will develop into a Neon Gold House Mafia DJ supergroup scenario. Tickets are only $5 (and did we mention there's free beer and vodka from 7-8pm too?) and are still available HERE, so get involved before it's too late. Trust us when we say this event will sell out.

INTRODUCING: BEYOND GOLD.

It's been an exciting year of new ventures for us here at Neon Gold, but we're not about to stop now. First came Popshop, bringing you the best new pop music the world has to offer the first Thursday of every month in the heart of the LES. Then there was our publishing joint venture* with Warner/Chappell, which resulted in the signing of Alex Winston as our first foray into the pub world. And up next, we're very pleased to announce a brand new online magazine called Beyond Gold, coming later this month with a launch party June 14th at Tammany Hall, featuring Grouplove, 1, 2, 3, Captain Cuts and more. With a rotating staff of contributors, Beyond Gold will be bringing you the best the world has to offer in fashion, design, art, music, culture and more, an online lifestyle magazine weaving together everything we love that falls just beyond the realm of Neon Gold.

We'll have more on Beyond Gold as we get closer to the June 14th launch, but for now it's a brilliant excuse to throw an amazing launch party with our dear friends Grouplove and 1, 2, 3 playing live, plus The Knocks, Xaphoon Jones and the NYC debut of Captain Cuts - whose remix of "Colours" is still the best song (remix or otherwise) we've heard this year - on the decks. It's one of the best lineups we've ever had the pleasure of assembling for a show, and at the low low price of $5 you really have no business being anywhere else on the 14th. And as if the bands and price tag weren't appealing enough, we've also got Absolut and Bomb Lager on board providing complimentary vodka and beer for the first hour from 7-8pm. You down? Yeah, we thought so. Tickets are available HERE, but with so much bang for so little buck, you're gonna want to move fast on these. Set times and mp3s below, get involved New York.

And then here's the video for Grouplove's brand new single "Itchin' On A Photograph", just because we haven't posted it yet and we love them more than we love ourselves.

*just to clarify, our publishing JV is also called Beyond Gold, and though the magazine and pub imprint aren't directly related, they're not entirely unrelated either. if anything it's just confusion for confusion's sake, smoke and mirrors y'all.

THIS HOUSE IS FULL OF MIRRORS.

Suns out guns out and the Captain Cuts dudes are just in time, bringing the heat once again on yet another completely unfuckwithable remix. This time it's fellow Golden State dreamweavers Superhumanoids going under the knife, as the Captains light a fire beneath frontlady Sarah Chernoff's beautiful, lilting vocals - and in turn, a fire betwixt our loins - transposing them over club-swallowing beats and synth drops straight out of Dr. Luke's diamond-encrusted playbook. Intricate, poetic and downright massive, it's everything we've come to expect from the unstoppable production duo and more, so go on... get a little Captain in you.

MP3: "Mirrors" (Captain Cuts + Grouplove Remix) - Superhumanoids

TAKE A SECOND LOOK AND YOU'LL SEE.

Captain Cuts exploded onto the scene earlier this year with their 1000% gamechanging remix of Grouplove's "Colours", and now we're thrilled to have them back with their sophomore effort on our latest Neon Gold release with Icona Pop (available here at the Neon Gold Shop). We've already made our feelings known about "Manners" (basically that it's pop music perfected), but now here's the Captain Cuts remix coming over the hill, ready to pound your town to hell with a fire in its eyes and an insatiable appetite for destruction. It starts off innocently enough, pristine synth tones drawing the listener in before the Captains rain down a metric ton of synths and percussion on an out-of-nowhere haymaker of a chorus that hits harder than Mike Tyson on PCP. Even caps lock can't do the unrelenting MASSIVENESS of the track justice, just turn the speakers up to 11 and hope you make it through. Hide your children. Hide your spouse. Shit just got REAL.

MP3: "Manners" (Captain Cuts Remix) - Icona Pop [exclusive]

THAT'S WHAT WE CALL IT.

We first introduced you to Grouplove (then known simply as Group) last March via the world premier of their triumphant anthem "Colours", which now 12 months on is set to become the band's debut single when it sees release via our sister label Chess Club next month. The original still sounds every bit as vital and refreshing now as it did when we debuted it last spring, but now breathing new life into it is the literally amazing Captain Cuts remix, another Neon Gold premier courtesy of the band's drummer/producer Ryan Rabin and his writing partner Ryan McMahon. Simply put, this is MASSIVE - all monumental bass surges, staccato piano stabs and frontman Christian Zucconi's frantic vocals running rampant across the mix as the original is transformed into an empire-toppling pop behemoth. The Captains even throw in a little stretch of epic dubstep wobble in the mix about halfway through that just comes out of nowhere to completely change the game and knock the listener for six. Seriously, we know the year is only seven days old and it's a bit early for Best of 2011 proclamations, but we'll be stunned if we hear a better remix in the next twelve months. Get involved.
